What is Bosch Injection Pump?

For top power and fuel efficiencies for commercial vehicles only: The Bosch unit pump system is a high-pressure pump with separate nozzle holder assembly, providing injection pressures up to 2,200 bar for optimal air/fuel mixture. The main peculiarity of unit pump systems is their design. Like unit injector systems, they use an individual pump for each cylinder.

Unlike UIS, however, pump and injection nozzle are not combined into a single unit. They represent two separate devices instead. A short line connects them with one another. Bosch Unit Pump system is expertly engineered for high and optimized engine performance and low fuel consumption.

The Function of Unit Bosch Injection Pump in the System

The unit pump system is a modular, time-controlled single-pump injection system. Each engine cylinder is supplied by a separate module consisting of a high-pressure plug-in pump with integrated, fast-switching solenoid valve and nozzle holder assembly. The unit pump is integrated in the diesel engine block and powered directly by an injection cam on the engine camshaft via a roller plunger.

If the solenoid valve is open, the pump cylinder can be filled during the suction stroke of the pump piston and return flow is possible during the delivery stroke. If the solenoid valve is energized and therefore closed, a pressure in the high-pressure range builds up between the pump piston and injection nozzle during the delivery stroke of the pump piston. If the nozzle opening pressure is exceeded, fuel is injected into the engine's combustion chamber. Closure of the solenoid valve determines the start of the injection process, while opening of the valve determines the injection quantity.

Types of Bosch Fuel Injection Pump

Distributor (Rotary) Fuel Injection Pump

As you might gather from the name, a rotary pump has more of a smaller circular design. These pumps are the earliest forms used in diesel engines and are considered highly durable and sustainable. The distributor pump's main feature is its injection system. The pump works when the plunger directs all fuel into each chamber and places it around each pump shaft. Once the pump shaft rotates, the plunger will press the fuel through the chamber to the ignition timing.

Inline Injection (Jerk) Fuel Pump

Unlike rotary pumps, inline injection pumps have the output lines in a straight line. This type of pump aligns with the engine cylinders in their number of fuel pressure mechanisms. The inline injection pumps are primarily used for medium to large-sized vehicles and construction machinery. Each cylinder in the engine has a pump and a plunger combination connected to it.

Continuous Pump

The continuous pump is the latest type of diesel engine injection pump. It's likely the most widely used and applied one today due to its durability and efficiency. Generally, you can find this pump applied to direct injection systems. The continuous pump is the smallest and has the most concise form out of all the pumps we'll mention. This is because this particular pump has very few functions.

High-Pressure Common Rail Pump

Based on its unique design, this pump is a system with a high-pressure circuit. The high-pressure common rail pump is manufactured with revolving pistols, as well as an inlet and one or two outlets. In the design, the outlets are connected to a rail that supplies the pressure to the system. So, unlike the inline or rotary pump, which covers the amount of pressure applied, the rail handles the pressure in the common rail pump, and the ECU takes care of the fuel distribution.

Advantages of Fuel Injection System with Bosch Injection Pump

Fuel Efficiency

Diesel engines are known for their high fuel efficiency due to the efficient combustion process and the use of diesel fuel injection systems. The fuel injection system meters the fuel precisely, ensuring that the engine receives the exact amount of fuel required for optimal performance.

Lower Emissions

Diesel fuel injection systems are designed to minimize emissions, making diesel engines a more environmentally friendly option than gasoline engines. The precise fuel metering and injection timing help reduce the amount of unburned fuel that escapes through the exhaust.

Durability

Diesel engines are known for their durability and longevity. The fuel injection system plays a critical role in this as it helps keep the engine running smoothly by providing the precise amount of fuel required for optimal combustion.

Power Output

Diesel engines typically produce more torque and power than gasoline engines, thanks to the efficient combustion process facilitated by the fuel injection system.

Main Parts of Bosch Fuel Injection Pump

The main parts are the suction port, discharge port, barrel, plunger, relief valve (delivery valve), quadrant/pinion, spill port, and control rack; these parts are collectively referred to as a fuel pump assembly.

●The suction port is where fuel enters the pump, and the discharge port is where fuel is discharged. Suction and discharge ports are also referred to as inlet and outlet ports respectively.

●The control rack connects to the plunger via the quadrant; it controls the volume of fuel injected. The control rack moves linearly, whilst the quadrant moves radially.

●The helix shaped plunger controls when the spill port is uncovered and thus the volume of fuel delivered (a detailed working explanation is given in the next section).

●A spring loaded delivery valve installed above the plunger ensures that no fuel is delivered to the injectors once the fuel pressure reduces beyond a certain point.

Fuel is discharged from the fuel pump to one or more fuel injectors. Each fuel injector is essentially a spring loaded needle valve, which opens and closes depending upon the fuel system pressure.

Selecting the Correct Fuel Pump

Horsepower

The amount of horsepower that your engine has will determine how much fuel flow is required to support that engine. As horsepower increases so does the volume of fuel required to support that power. A good estimator of volume to power is approximately 10 hp per gallon or 2.64 hp per liter. However, to actually know the gph you must also consider the fuel pressure required for your engine.

Fuel Pressure

Different engines require different fuel pressure. For example a carbureted engine typically requires between 4 to 7 psi whereas a typical GM LS engine runs on about 58 psi.  Furthermore, if you are running boost the pressure required for your engine may increase under load. A fuel pump will flow at its highest volume when there is no pressure (free flow). As fuel pressure increases, fuel flow decreases. Every pump has a different flow volume at a given pressure.

Voltage

Fuel pumps have different flow rates at different voltages. As voltage increases so does the speed of the fuel pump which will increase the flow of a pump at any given pressure. Because of this it is good practice to see how a pump is rated at a given voltage. Most cars will produce about 13.5 volts when running. However, if your alternator does not produce 13.5 volts, or you simply want to plan conservatively simply look at the flow ratings of a pump at 12 volts.

Fuel Injection Pump Installation and Timing Guide

Once you have removed your old fuel injection pump, here's how to install your new pump and set the timing:

Rotate the engine until the #1 piston rises to its highest point.

.Connect the new pump to all fuel lines, except for the top hard lines that connect to each injector. Do not connect the pump yet.

Press the primer pump to build pressure, open the bleeder valve to release air, then close the bleeder valve. Repeat until fuel comes out of the bleeder valve.

Slowly rotate the fuel injection pump shaft. Stop rotating as soon as fuel rises to the top of the #1 hardline port.

Install the pump onto the fuel injection pump gear and bolt pump to the timing gearcase.

This procedure should get your tractor running, but some fine-tuning may be required to achieve optimum performance.

Some timing gears have a set of two dots, which are the timing marks. The single dot on the idle gear should meet between the 2 dots on the timing gear.

Important: Be sure to check the pump oil after installation. There are normally two small bolts on the backside of the pump that are used for fill levels. Remove the bottom bolt, then add oil until it comes out of that hole.

precautions for product use

In the process of using the fuel injection pump, we will always encounter many problems. Below we mainly introduce the 10-point method of maintaining the injector. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does a Bosch injector pump work?

A: The Bosch Common Rail Injector injects the precise amount of fuel into the combustion chamber at the right time and in the right quantity. This can be actuated with a solenoid on the injector, and the duration and timing will be controlled by the ECU (Electronic Control Unit).

Q: What is the injection pump?

A: An Injection Pump is the device that pumps fuel into the cylinders of a diesel engine. Traditionally, the injection pump was driven indirectly from the crankshaft by gears, chains or a toothed belt (often the timing belt) that also drives the camshaft.

Q: What is a Bosch pump?

A: For top power and fuel efficiencies for commercial vehicles only: The Bosch unit pump system is a high-pressure pump with separate nozzle holder assembly, providing injection pressures up to 2,200 bar for optimal air/fuel mixture. The main peculiarity of unit pump systems is their design.

Q: How do I identify my Bosch injection pump?

A: The BOSCH pump number is stamped on the side of the injection pump. For common rail pumps a black label is stuck on one side of the pump . The basis of BOSCH product number is a base ten digits composed of a first character followed by a blank and three groups of three characters separated by a space.

Q: Is an injector pump a fuel pump?

A: A fuel injector atomizes the pressurized fuel. It also injects it into the combustion chamber. In comparison, fuel pumps pressurize fuel and send it through the fuel line and fuel injectors.

Q: What are the types of injector pump?

A: Distributor (Rotary) fuel injection pump.
Inline-injection (Jerk) fuel injection pump.
Continuous pump.
High-pressure common rail pump.

Q: What is the pressure on Bosch diesel injectors?

A: The common-rail system with piezo injectors by Bosch enables the flexible injection of fuel at pressures up to 2,700 bar.

Q: What are the different types of injection pumps?

A: The main types of injection systems include pump-line-nozzle, unit injector, and common rail. Modern injection systems reach very high injection pressures, and utilize sophisticated electronic control methods.

Q: What controls the fuel injection pumps?

A: Most high pressure pumps are mechanically actuated. In unit pump and unit injector systems, mechanically actuated high pressure pumps are driven by the camshaft. In pump-line-nozzle designs, the pump is driven by the engine's gear train.

Q: How does a Bosch VP44 pump work?

A: When the pistons are compressed, pressure builds up in the rotor and when it exceeds injector pop off pressure, fuel flows through the injector until the computer on the top of the VP44 injection pump shuts off the solenoid valve, allowing it to open, which relieves the pressure in the rotor to below pop off pressure and fuel stops flowing.

Q: What are the parts of injection pump?

A: The main parts of a jerk fuel pump are the suction port, discharge port, barrel, plunger, relief valve (delivery valve), quadrant/pinion, spill port, and control rack; these parts are collectively referred to as a fuel pump assembly.

Q: What is the pressure of an injection pump?

A: Inline injection pumps look like mini inline engines. The earliest inline injection pumps delivered 3,000-5,000 psi of injection pressure, while the newer Bosch P7100, found on '94 to '981/2 Cummins engines, delivers 18,000 psi of pressure.

Q: What is the difference between a fuel injector and a fuel injection pump?

A: Your car's fuel pump delivers gasoline to the fuel injector. The fuel injector injects/sprays fuel as a fine mist into the intake manifold (or combustion chamber) at a very precise angle. Within the intake manifold (and combustion chamber), air and fuel mix.

Q: Is fuel pump and fuel injection the same?

A: Yes, a fuel injection engine does have a fuel pump. The fuel pump is responsible for pumping fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel injectors, which then deliver the fuel into the engine's combustion chambers. This system allows for more precise control over the fuel delivery compared to carbureted engines.

Q: What is the difference between carburetor and injection pump?

A: In carbureted systems the fuel gets drawn from the tank, while in a Fuel Injected system it depends on a fuel pump installed inside the tank for a fine-grained control over fuel flow. The fuel injection nozzle also goes directly inside the combustion chamber.

Q: What is the maximum pressure for a Bosch fuel pump?

A: All Bosch pumps have data sheets which map their fuel volume flow rates at various pressures to take the guesswork out of pump sizing. Most commonly these are 3 bar, 4 bar and 5 bar (43.5psi, 58psi, 72.5psi respectively), however some go as high as 8 bar (116psi).

Q: How many types of injection pumps are used in diesel engines?

A: There are basically three different diesel injection systems, the mechanical injector pump, the electronic controlled injector pump and the electronic controlled common rail system.

Q: What is the pressure of the diesel injection pump?

A: 10,000-30,000-psi. In many cases, the injector is mounted just like a spark plug would be in a gas engine. But unlike fuel-injected gas engines that inject fuel at 10-60 psi, diesel fuel-injection systems run in the 10,000-30,000-psi range.

Q: How do diesel injection pumps work?

A: When the diesel fuel is put into the pump, one end allows the fuel to move into the chamber where the combustion will take place and the other end is where the plunger is located. As the plunger moves back and forth, it leaves an opening for the fuel to go into the combustion chamber while moving backwards.

Q: What controls the VP44 injection pump?

A: VP44 is a rotary style medium high pressure injection pump that is mostly mechanical with two electronically controlled components in it – the fuel metering solenoid and the timing advance solenoid.

Q: What is the importance of injection pump?

A: The main purpose of a fuel injection system or pump is to deliver fuel to the cylinders of a diesel engine, but the process of delivering the fuel impacts the engine performance, emissions and engine noise characteristics.

Q: What are the disadvantages of fuel injection pump?

A: Expensive compared to conventional carburetors.
Requires complex tools to tune the FI system through custom ECU mapping.
Needs expensive tools to repair it, which leads to higher costs.
If the ECU fails, the bike will not start and you might be left stranded.
